Ingleside is one of the neighborhoods near Lake Merced. It is also near San Francisco State University and the Stonestown Shopping Center, the only “suburban” shopping center in the city of San Francisco. Merced Manor is a small tract of modern condominiums and townhouses. Lakeside, despite its name, is not on the lake. This neighborhood is located behind San Francisco State University, and the homes have charming picket fences surrounding tidy rose gardens. Also in the District is Harding Park. Featuring playgrounds, trails, lake access and a public golf course - deemed a “hidden gem” after its recent renovation, Harding Park is a favorite of San Franciscans. The Olympic Country Club is also close by, where world-class golfers such as Tiger Woods participate in tournaments. The San Francisco Golf Club is also located near Lake Merced.
The ethnic and racial diversity of the large multicultural and multilingual public school system is viewed very positively, readying students for diversity in the “real world.” The University of California, San Francisco is a top health and science institution. San Francisco State University is a top school for applied research studies. The Academy of Art College is the largest fully accredited private school of art and design in the nation. The University of California Hastings College of Law is located downtown, as well as the private Golden Gate University, which was founded over a hundred years ago. San Francisco also features the California Culinary Institute and the much respected San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The arts are important to San Francisco residents. Murals decorate the Mission District and museums are everywhere, housing a vast range of objects. The Cartoon Art Museum features comic books, animated movies and sculpture. The Ansel Adams Center for Photography displays the artist’s works in changing exhibits. The Cable Car Museum is the home of the city’s first cable car, which was built in 1873. The underground viewing room displays how cable cars work. The Pacific Heritage Museum showcases the cultures of people living all around the Pacific Ocean. The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park features a bayside recreation area called Aquatic Park. The Maritime Museum chronicles the history of water transportation from 1800 in models, artifacts and photographs. The Telephone Pioneer Communications Museum contains antique telephones along with switchboards, photographs and memorabilia. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is housed in a modern building designed by Mario Botta. The museum houses a large collection of modern and contemporary art. The Mission San Francisco de Assisi was built in 1776 by Father Junipero Serra. The original redwood timbers still stand, lashed together by leather strips. A museum at the mission contains old manuscripts and relics of bygone days. Golden Gate Park was designed by Scottish landscape gardener John McLaren. A dozen lakes, plant material from all over the world, and trails are just some of the things to see at the park. The DeYoung Art Museum, The California Academy of Sciences, a bison paddock, a Dutch windmill, playing fields, tennis courts, a polo stadium and equestrian center, a golf course and a music concourse offer something for everyone. Golden Gate Park is a great place to watch the sun set and the famous fog roll in. Experience the cultural riches of the city by visiting Chinatown and the Japan Center. Shopping highlights of the City include Union Square, home of Neiman Marcus, Tiffany’s, and Macy’s, as well as specialty boutique shopping in various neighborhoods, such as Cow Hollow. Other tourist attractions include Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, Fisherman’s Wharf and Lombard Street, the curviest street in the world. Professional sports teams in the Bay Area include the National League Giants, the American League Oakland A’s, the National Football League San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders, the NBA Golden State Warriors, and the National Hockey League San Jose Sharks. The famous UC Berkeley and Stanford Women’s Basketball and Volleyball teams also are not far away. Festivals San Francisco is famous for its year-round celebrations. The annual Gay Pride Week in early summer attracts close to one million people from all over the world. Other events include the Bay to Breakers run/walk, the Cherry Blossom Festival, Carnaval, Dia de los Muertos, Fleet Week, and numerous street fairs that feature local artists and musicians. One of the most well-known fairs is the Haight/Ashbury Street Fair, which takes place in the Haight, an area made famous in the 1960’s. San Francisco also hosts several International Film Festivals and Jazz and other music festivals throughout the year. |
